Unsweetened

Aug12

We got to thinking about the least-romantic songs that get played at weddings. Those songs that get mistaken for "sweet" because of their melody or the wrong interpretation of its lyrics, but are really nasty... or actually about a break-up, or death, or a creepy stalker... you get the idea.

Here's a few tunes that we've heard recently at weddings that maybe should have been reconsidered. You might want to listen to them a bit more closely before you dance your first dance to them:

Every Breath You Take by The Police
Keep On Lovin' You by REO Speedwagon
Your Body Is A Wonderland by John Mayer
I Will Always Love You by Dolly Parton (or Whitney Houston)
White Wedding by Billy Idol
Just Like Heaven by The Cure
My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion
Possession by Sarah MacLachlan
Here's To the Night by Eve 6
You Are the Everything by R.E.M.
I Don't Want to Wait by Paula Cole
End Of the Road by Boyz II Men
One by U2
Respect by Aretha Franklin

Which songs have you mistaken as romantic? Don't feel embarrassed. We know someone who only just realized that Little Red Corvette is NOT about a car!

I was thinking about the song "Hotel California" by The Eagles as a potential wedding song. My fiance and I just love it. But, I'm pretty sure its not a romantic song. Does anyone know what it's really about?

haha! Well, if he loves Hotel California that much then go for it! I always thought it was druggy and dark, and all about self destruction. Maybe save it for later in the night!

Ohmygosh this is so embarrassing, but I considered playing "Falling in Love" by Aerosmith...my fiance laughed for days about it. Check out some of the lyrics:

"We was making love when you
told me that you loved me
I thought ol' cupid he was taking aim
I was a believer when you told
me that you loved me
And then you called me someone else's name"

and it gets worse. Haha!

I attended a wedding that had the song "If I were a carpenter and you were a lady". I am no scholar but doesn't that imply that the bride wasn't a lady?

My new mother-in-law insisted on singing "My Heart Will Go On" at our wedding, which was (one of) the sources of major stress of my upcoming big day. We tried as tactfully as possible to let her down gently. Thankfully at the last minute she decided not to serenade us! Whew!

My fiancee' thinks it would be cool to use Queen's [guitar] version of the wedding march from the movie "Flash Gordon", lol!! I really wanted to give him something he really wanted but simply could not bring myself to walk down the isle to Queen!

My fiance and I are a totally fun couple. Into comedy and pranks and teasing one another. We want our wedding to be romantic, but we just aren't stuffy formal people. SO, there will be a nice love song for our first dance, but after that, we are playing whatever makes us smile, and we certainly aren't above playing some Wierd Al or Dane Cook. We want people laughing and dancing.

Someone did suggest Hinder's "Lips of an Angel" because it was a pretty song. LOL - it's about a guy who is cheating and never really could get over his ex. SERIOUSLY!!! NOT a wedding song!

If you start listening word for word to every song you will never choose anything.Your first dance should be sweet and romantic if you want it to be, but if you dont then pick something that reflects you as a couple. We are doing everthing to not use the typical song those that you know you just heard and saw the bride&groom dance to at the last 12 wedding youve been at. We are making sure to hear songs we want to hear and that are great to dance to! Its a Party have fun with it! You dont have to be stuffy in formal wear! We considered Adam Sandlers I wanna grow old with you (Wedding Singer)for our 1st dance . The plan is to remember & enjoy every moment for many years. Make it fun for you and your guest.

Hotel California is about a brofel/ whore house that he's not allowed to leave. Not a good idea.
