This week on Radio Romance:
Wild Is The Wind by David Bowie
When we posted about the best makeout music the other day, we nominated Nina Simone's "Wild Is The Wind," but though it may be perfect for an intimate setting, her version sounds a bit exposed for a public reception.
"Wild Is the Wind" was origonally performed by Johnny Mathis in 1957, and has since been covered or sampled by countless others, including Barbra Streisand, George Michael, Cat Power and TV On The Radio. Nina Simone's breathtaking version is often considered the most essential one, but we also have a soft spot for David Bowie's blue-eyed soul take on it.
Recorded for his 1976 album Station To Station, Bowie's interpretation feels ripped from an unreleased 70's musical: All swooning romanticism and killer rock star swagger.
